Community Liaison Officer

Part Time Role

Afghan Women's Settlement Support Programme

The Afghan Women's Organisation Victoria provide specialised support services for recently arrived Afghan women and girls. The 'Afghan Women's Settlement Support Programme' provide a wide range of services and support to help strengthen and empower Afghan women and girls, these range from referral support, conversational English classes, sewing classes, weekly information sessions and capacity building programs, weekly community kitchens, a community hub drop in centre, outreach services, excursions and other community connection programs. Weekly Information Sessions

Weekly Community Kitchen

Thursdays from 10:00am - 12:00pm

Location: 49 Princes Hwy, Dandenong

 

The AWOV Information Sessions take place every Thursday during the school terms. The Information Sessions provide participants with vital information on Australian systems, laws and cultural practices, financial management, mental wellbeing support, parenting, driving/road rules, healthy relationships, environmental awareness, employment, education and more. Sessions will be provided by AWOV in collaboration with guest speakers from respective organisations.

 Mondays: Beginner Class   9:30am - 11:30am 

            Advanced Class 12:00pm - 2:00

  Wednesdays: Beginner Class   9:30am - 11:30am 

                Advanced Class 12:00pm - 2:00pm

Location: AWOV Office - 49 Princes Hwy, Dandenong 

 

For many newly arrived women and girls, learning another language can be difficult. That's why, in partnership with Springvale Learning and Activity Centre we are running English classes with professional English teachers and an Afghan interpreter twice a week. Taking an evidence-based approach, participant learn English through conversation, dialogue and written communication.

English Language Classes

Fridays from 10:00am - 1:00pm

Location: Dandenong Primary School - 174-182 Foster St, Dandenong

 

The AWOV Community Kitchen take place every Friday during the school terms. The Community Kitchen is a pro-social program that seeks to provide information to newly arrived Afghan women. Information on topics such as healthy diet, nutrition, mindfulness, physical health and more will be provided to participants. Information provision will take place during the cooking and meal sharing time.

Tuesdays: Session 1 9:30am - 11:30am

                  Session 2 12:00pm - 2:00pm

Location: AWOV Office - 49 Princes Hwy, Dandenong 

 

Our weekly sewing classes, in partnership with Springvale Learning and Activity Centre provide Afghan women from all walks of life the opportunity to develop their skills and talents in textiles, arts and crafts. Participants learn the details and intricacies of sewing and dressmaking, while also learning how to build their own small business. This leadership development initiative takes an economic and skills-based approach, to support Afghan women in financial independence.

Sewing Classes

Join our culturally and linguistically tailored program for young Afghan women (12-20 years old.) Programs run after school, weekends and school holidays. 

 

Programs involve:

  • School holiday swimming program

  • Weekly homework support group

  • Learner driving program

  • Leadership program

  • Excursions
